How to use this hadith reference
Each block below links to Sunnah.com (or a cited scholar summary for Ibn Mas'ud) so the Arabic, English, and Darussalam grade can be checked directly. For a pastoral summary of what these reports mean in practice, read benefits of Surah Mulk. Verification rules live on the editorial policy page.
Intercession until forgiven — Tirmidhi 2891 & Abu Dawud 1400
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“There is a Surah in the Qur'an of thirty Ayat which intercedes for a man until he is forgiven. It is Tabarak Alladhi Biyadihil-Mulk.”
- Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2891 — Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2891, graded Hasan by Darussalam
- Sunan Abi Dawud 1400 — parallel wording (Hadith reports (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2891; Sunan Abi Dawud 1400) say intercession until forgiven)
Protection from the punishment of the grave — Ibn Mas'ud
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: whoever recites Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk every night, Allah will protect him by it from the punishment of the grave (al-Nasa'i, al-Sunan al-Kubra 10479; classed hasan by al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib 1475)
This route is transmitted through al-Nasa'i, al-Sunan al-Kubra 10479. SurahMulk.us cites al-Albani’s grading in Sahih al-Targhib 1475 and summarizes the isnad discussion at IslamQA 26240. It is the primary grave-protection wording on the grave protection guide, not the Ibn Abbas tent report below.
Reciting before sleep — Tirmidhi 2892
Jabir (RA) reported:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) would not sleep until he recited: Alif Lam Meem Tanzeel (Surah As-Sajdah) and Tabarak Al-Ladhi Biyadihil-Mulk (Surah Al-Mulk).”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2892, graded Da'if by Darussalam on sunnah.com; al-Hakim and al-Dhahabi authenticated it. Ritual steps: before-sleep protocol.
Ibn Abbas tent over the grave — Tirmidhi 2890
Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) narrated that a companion pitched a tent over a grave, heard Surah Al-Mulk being recited inside, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said it is “the defender” and delivers from the punishment of the grave. Full text: Tirmidhi 2890.
Grade on this site: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2890, graded Da'if by Darussalam on sunnah.com. Listed for completeness in the grades table; not treated as primary grave evidence (see Ibn Mas'ud above). Do not confuse Tirmidhi 2898 on Sunnah.com — that entry belongs to Surah Al-Ikhlas, not Al-Mulk.
