Listening to Surah Mulk Before Sleep

Listening to Surah Mulk before sleep is rewarded, but it is not identical to reciting. The Sunnah wording is that the Prophet ﷺ recited Surah Al-Mulk before he slept. Recite with the tongue when you can; use audio when you cannot.

What the Sunnah wording points to

Jabir (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he recited Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk (Tirmidhi 2892). Recitation is an act of the tongue and heart. Listening is also worship — the Quran is meant to be heard — but a speaker playing while you scroll or already sleep is a weaker match to that wording.

A practical ranking for tired nights

  1. Recite from memory or from a mushaf / reader.
  2. Listen and follow the Arabic with your eyes and lips — verse playback on audio.
  3. Listen only if that is all you can give tonight, then return to reciting tomorrow. Do not guilt-quit the habit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is listening to Surah Mulk before sleep enough? +
Listening to the Quran is an act of worship and a mercy on exhausted nights. The hadith that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he recited Surah Al-Mulk points to recitation with the tongue. Recite when you can; listen as a backup, not a permanent substitute.
Does playing an MP3 while I fall asleep count as reciting? +
Playing audio in the background is not the same as reciting. If you follow along and move your lips, you are closer to recitation. If the file plays after you are asleep, treat it as listening, not as having recited.
What if I am too tired to recite from memory? +
Read from a mushaf or the on-site reader, or listen while following the Arabic. Consistency with presence beats skipping the night. See the before-sleep protocol for the full ritual.
